I always figured that websites like this got money based on (1) clicks and (2) how long people spent on the site ("time spent listening" as we used to say in radio). I always thought the "super fans" -- the people who are devoted to the brand, who spend a lot of time listening/shopping/enjoying a place accounted for a lot of a brand's success/revenue.
So you ax the OT. Don't you lose not only the clicks but also the people who stay on the site all day. Even if that's a low number of people, wouldn't that be a real % of your numbers. Assuming the OT people leave the site entirely, isn't he screwed?
I think it's interesting the number of non-regulars who lament his decision to kill the OT. And I agree with all of those who posted over there that's he making a mistake. Slopey's posts were quite good, as usual.

Hi all. Really saddened that B'stoner is shutting down the PLUSAs. But the site has gotten more and more mainstream and boring in the last year. Jon seems to be searching for a way to bump up the site to a higher level of return (hence, the aborted experiment of the Philly site). Looks like the new formula is to turn Brownstoner into a real estate listings page.
The OT, the PLUSAs--and Montrose's posts--were the last bastion of authenticity on the site.
BTW, Montrose, if you are reading this, I have been thinking for a long time there's a great book in the compliation of your posts. I hope you've kept the copyright to them.

ReplyDeleteI always figured that websites like this got money based on (1) clicks and (2) how long people spent on the site ("time spent listening" as we used to say in radio). I always thought the "super fans" -- the people who are devoted to the brand, who spend a lot of time listening/shopping/enjoying a place accounted for a lot of a brand's success/revenue.
So you ax the OT. Don't you lose not only the clicks but also the people who stay on the site all day. Even if that's a low number of people, wouldn't that be a real % of your numbers. Assuming the OT people leave the site entirely, isn't he screwed?

Jon seems to be searching for a way to bump up the site to a higher level of return (hence, the aborted experiment of the Philly site). Looks like the new formula is to turn Brownstoner into a real estate listings page.
